Dead Set: Deconstruction of scenes 1

Episode 1 Opening:

  • The show begins with the opening titles of big brother and the theme music as if it is an actual episode of the reality series. The eye logos and cameras in the opening montage are symbolic of the idea of constantly being watch and overall the opening is recognised by people and the popularity of the show is used to attract attention.

  • A non diegetic voiceover would also be recognised by fans and associated with the show. It continues to run as a normal show with mid shots observing the housemates.  It is immediately obvious that there are a range of personalities in the house and they are all over exaggerated through mise en scene and their actions. This could suggest that the producers are trying to be politically correct by having all kinds of contestants in the house.

  •         The media influence aspect is largely introduced when the mid shot of Grayson and Angel in the diary room zooms out to the editing room where the show is put together. Patrick looks authoritative in a suit and the way he is positioned standing up over the employees shoulder.
  •          Patrick gives an instruction in diegetic dialogue to find a clip “the chavier the better” this shows that they have preconceived ideas of how the want contestants to be portrayed and they must represent them as extreme versions of one stereotype to the public, even if this is not how they truly are.
