Subliminal Messaging

  •  Subliminal messaging is the use of images or sounds that can not be perceived by the consciuos human mind but are recieved by the subconscience and can influence behaviour.
  • The best know research in to the effectiveness of subliminal messaging was conducted by James Vicary in 1957. Over 6 week he performed his experiment on over 45 000 people in a New Jersy cinema who were watching the film ‘Picnic’. Every 5 seconds the messages “Eat Popcorn”  and “ Drink Coca-Cola” appeared on the screen but only for 3/1000’s of a second; so quickly it would not me noticed by the conscious mind. Vicary was astounded by the results. Sales of popcorn rose by 57% and Coca-cola by 18.1%. Subliminal advertising is now illegal in the UK.

  •  It s also been suggested by popular culture tha subliminal messaging have been used in government, politics and military; particularly in America. The Simpsons: Lisa notices the repeated phrase "Yvan Eht Nioj" in a music video and when she plays it backwards finds that it means “Join the Navy”.

  •  2001 film “Josie and the Pussycats”:  A girl group are caught up in a conspiracy where they find the US governtment are controlling trends through subliminal messages in pop music. A governtement agents says that subliminal messaging works better in films and the tiltle is displayed rapidly with the words “Join the Army” below it.

Lady Gaga
  •  There are many theories behind lady gaga and subliminal messages that are carried in her videos and people interpret her song lyrics in many different ways. For this particular post, I will focus on the music video for the song “Telephone” featuring Beyonce.
  • Taking the song at face value it is completely harmless. However, the video is a sequel to her previous sing “Paparazzi”, both directed by Joanas Akerlund.
  • It is widely believed that the deeper messages in these songs refer to mind control and in the video for Paparazzi Gaga was a mind controlled slave who was programmed to kill her boyfriend. Telephone continues the story where she is in jail for committing the crime.
  • “Telephone” is used as a metaphor for her brain and “not picking up the telephone” in the song refers to not answering her brain and being dislocated from reality through mind control.
  • Blank expressions on her face when serving poisoned honey at the diner are also suggestive of mind controlled behaviour.
  • It is also believed that Gaga uses many symbols which are associated with illuminate (who use mind control) in the video such as covering one eye and the a-ok sign:
