Misery trailer deconstruction.

Misery Trailer

Theatrical Trailer-

•        The trailer starts off with a blizzard being shown and a turned over car in the distance, the fading between clips shows a man inside the car. There is also a non diegetic instrumental soundtrack which is repetitive and almost creepy alongside the sounds there is a non diegetic voice over of a woman talking and seems very knowledgeable she is, we can infer, to be talking to the man.
•         The scene then changes to a house with the man in a bed, the furnishings of the house are minimal and basic. However there is some cutaway editing as a man and woman talk about a missing person who again can be inferred to be the man.
•         The eerie repetitive music still plays in the background as there is a close up of the man’s chin as he is being shaved by the woman ‘Annie’ she says ‘I was following you’ as though she was stalking the man. It then jump cuts to a Point of view shot through binoculars and a non diegetic voice over saying ‘Paul is dead’ is then fades to the isolated cabin, showing it to have lights on, as someone is home.
•         The non diegetic music then changes to something more sinister and slow. Annie comes out from the shadows calling the man a ‘dirty bird’ half of her face is shadowed as though she has two sides, of her, one of which is darker and crueller, and we as an audience are going to see it. She talks about ‘Misery’ as though she is a real person, not a fictional character. As an audience we can infer she has an obsession with Misery and the books, so also with Paul.
•         There is a close up shot of Paul turning over the phone and seeing it isn’t connected and it then jump cuts to his face to see the realisation that he is in fact trapped in the cabin. It then changes to match on action of Annie pulling out a gun, then of Paul falling out of bed, crawling through the house and taking a knife, the parallel editing alongside this shows Annie driving somewhere, which can be inferred home. There is then a shot reverse shot of Paul in bed and the door.
•         The non diegetic soundtrack quickens the pace as each clip changes quicker and the intensity is being increased. Throughout this montage of clips there is a cutaway of what seems to be lettering and it becomes clearer as more letters are shown that it is the title of the film.
Annie comes in and there is a point of view shot of Paul looking at Annie putting a wooden block between his feet and says ‘sh darling it’s for the best’ as though her using a hammer against Paul is perfectly logical. It then blacks out as a non diegetic voice says ‘God I love you’

The Truman Show Poster Deconstruction

·         The Truman show poster.

  •       The poster looks as though it’s advertising for a TV programme, however the tag line is ‘on the air, unaware’ which indicates what the film is about that although it’s a programme, ‘Truman’ is unaware. It is a TV programme within a film.
  •       The title is at the bottom of the screen which doesn’t follow the typical conventions of a film poster as it is not in the eye line.
  •       The picture of him quietly sleeping is again enhancing that he is blissfully oblivious to what is actually happening, and that people are looking at him.
  •       The fact it is a big screen with the words ‘live’ makes it seem even more real and the 'Day 10,909' showing how long this has been on air.

Location 2 (The basement)

Interior Location Research.
After initial research of looking at images of good looking basements that fit the criteria of what we wanted, we started looking at films with basements in them. Basements that are a scary place to be, where the characters obviously want to get out, but can't.
The first film I looked at was a film with Danny Dyer called 'The Basement' which is about six friends who are lured to an underground basement for a sinister experiment. The bare and dark place is very scary, and is the kind of place we are looking for too.

This picture shows the kind of thing we are looking for. It shows a large space to any kind of 'torture' could potentially happen. The dull and bare walls make it seem as though it is unhabitual and desolate, which is the look we are looking for as it seems a very rejected place to be.
The picture to the right show different scene from the 'Basement' this is a corrider, the long shot straight down the corrider seems very creepy, as though never ending. again the bare bricked walls shows a neglected place. There is also lack of lights within the corridor, this could build up suspense as people wouldn't know where they are going or see if there is a way out.

This last picture shows a hand tracing the word 'HELP' which has been written in what looks like blood, this can be considered a typical convention of horror films, however it works as it can seem very scary and realistic.

This  film shows the kind of basement we are looking for, it is very bare and run down. The walls and dull and almost neglected. the lack of lights adds to the scary effect as nothing is clearly shown and the wrting again makes the situation much more realistic, which is the aim we are also looking for.

Interior location ideas.

  • Part of our interior location would preferably be in a basement or somewhere hidden, as it gives off a creepier effect of isolation.
  •  The kind of basement we were looking at would be like this one as it is bare seeming empty and not homely at all.
  •  It also has cracked walls and no paint work as though its a place that has not been tended to, a very rundown basement.
  • The fact there is only one window allows in some light, but not much.
  •  The whole basement looks very run down, large, and desolate.

  • This second picture also shows a run down basement.
  • The concrete walls with rust stains look very rejected.
  •  The non plastered walls with wires and floorboards make is look more dangerous and not safe.
  •  There are no windows so no natural light can get in, the only light is from a bare light bulb.

    • A Different interior location that could be included in our teaser trailer would be a dining room. A room that looked rather traditional with a large table.
  • An idea could include having a large roast dinner on the table, this could infer a happy occasion. It could be over exaggerated so that it obviously looks fake.
  • another idea was to even have Christmas decorations in the background, as stereo typically Christmas is a happy time to be shared with family members.
  • The kind of look we could go for could be like the one below

One hour photo poster research

One Hour Photo Poster Deconstruction.

  • The landscape poster shows a collage of negative pictures and a man staring up at them. To a passer by this would look quite strange and the man is right in the middle so would be in eye line. He isn't facing the front though so it adds mystery.
  • At the top of the poster is an extreme close up of a man half hidden by a camera showing he is trying to be inconspicuous. He is looking straight forward, so would hold your gaze no matter what angle, it can be inferred that he is the main protagonist.
  • The picture has been edited to look like he is red, which could represent the 'developing room' and give out connotations of anger, aggression, and risk which could infer what the film might be about.
  • The tagline says 'There's nothing more dangerous than a familiar face' which gives away part of the genre being a thriller as it says 'dangerous,' so something bad will probably happen.
  • This poster doesn't follow typical conventions of posters as there isn't one main focus there are two, making passers by look all around the poster, the title is at the bottom also.

  • This is a different poster from the same film.
  • This shows the main protagonist also, this time he is distracted and looking at a reel of negative pictures.
  • The white gloves show he might trying to hide his fingerprints, not wanting to leave a trace.
  • The poster sightly follows the conventions of a poster with the main picture and title in the middle.
  • There is not a tagline so leaves complete mystery in what the film entails.

Poster Reasearch 2

                   Alice in wonderland.
  •  Use of quirky typography, follows genre of film.
  • As Johnny Depp as the main focus as he is a well known actor and people would go see the film as he is in it.
  • ‘Tim burton’ film, gives an indication of genre, will be funny and quirky.
  • Indication that is fantasy with the big castle in the background, huge mushrooms, and a blue caterpillar. This also shows it is more directed towards children.

                 Dorian Gray.

  • Gothic style typography.
  • Main character showing two sides of him: one is perfect, the other broken and tainted, indicating the films content. That it will be about him tainting his life.
  • Gothic Church in the background.
  • Tagline ‘forever young, forever cursed’ ties in with the picture.
  • All very dark colours; blacks, greys, with a stormy sky. Deep red inferring seduction?
  • Then bright orange to look like flames cutting right through him as though he is slowly disintegrating

                         Beautiful Losers.

  • Colourful typography. With same colour rain drops as though they have formed the title.
  • Butterfly as a whole, with a person in the middle as the body of the butterfly.
  • Tagline ‘Make something from nothing’ very positive way at looking at a situation.
  • All very colourful random images within the butterfly filling up the spaces.
  • Cast and crew names, pictures from the film, and characters all fitted in, with brightly coloured typography and outlines.
  • Blue sky in the background, like an actual butterfly flying through the sky, carefree style.
  • Black stencilled leaves around the edges, opposite to the rest of the poster, only part which has a negative connotation.

The Truman show scene deconstruction

The Truman show

Clip-

Camera Angles
Throughout the whole clip every camera angle has a clear view of each character as it is meant to be a television programme. The overhead shot when Truman is threatening Meryl shows them clearly, and it allows the audience of the programme to see them both but also the viewers of the film to see them both too.
The close up shot of Meryl allows the audience to see her emotions and how upset she is.
Sound
The diegetic dialogue of Meryl talking about the cocoa as though advertising it enhances the fact its a television programme and Truman himself picks up on that. When she shouts ‘Do something’ and looks straight at the camera it again allows Truman to question who she is talking to.
The non diegetic sound of a violin adds a creepy effect to what is going on, on screen.
Meryl says ‘its unprofessional’ she is talking to the studio and the crew members directly.
Mise en scene
The scene depicts a stereotypical home, with plain furnishings.  The button on Meryl’s clothes is actually a camera to that the audience can see Truman’s face, this enhances Truman’s
Accusations that Meryl is part of a big conspiracy.
Throughout the whole scene Meryl puts on an oversized smile, as though no matter how bad a situation get she still has to smile as she is on TV.
The use of the Mococoa as a distraction but also used to advertise to the viewers.
Editing
The shot reverse shot of each character allows the audience to see the characters reaction to what is being said.

Clip-

Camera Angles
Each camera angle in the show has been picked by the director. He uses the ‘button cam’ to get a full head shot of Truman at a low angle. In the studio there are close up shots of all the crew who are watching what is on screen. There is also use of a green cam as Truman walks towards his ‘father’ making it perfect for the audience to see the whole scene.
At the end there is a close up shot of the creator as his reunion is a success and you can see it in his eyes.
Sound
The creator of the Truman show says ‘easy on the fog’ showing that the father son reunion is being played out perfectly for the viewers of the world. The timing the dramatic diegetic piano music perfectly to that it will coincide to what is on screen, in the actual film there is a non diegetic music being played.
Truman says ‘I never stopped believing’ because he truly believes his ‘father’ has come back from the dead, yet we know as an audience it has been set up deliberately and perfectly to coincide with the previous events.
At the end the diegetic cheers from the crew of the TV show and watchers allow the audience to see it was a success.
Mise en scene
The use of the fog and easing it up allows the scene to run perfectly so that when the shot changes to the audience they are able to see clearly.
The two elderly ladies sitting in their home watching the reunion with Truman cushions allows us as an audience to see that The Truman show is watched by wide range of people.
Editing
The use of shot reverse shot and zooming in on Truman builds tension alongside the build up of emotion that Truman is probably feeling.
The pan upwards of the viewers of Truman are holding each other looking up engrossed in the reunion.
The parallel editing allows the audience to see Truman and his father alongside the people in the studio making it all happen.

Clip-
·         The scene starts with a long shot of Truman through a camera which looks like its inside the bathroom cabinet. It says ‘On air’ at the top which shows this is being broadcasted.
·         Truman is looking straight forward and the shot changes to a long shot of two male crew in the studio and they stop what they are doing and one says ‘Jesus do you think he knows’ worried that Truman know they are looking.
·          He then starts whistling with the diegetic dialogue of ‘come in major berbank’ showing he is looking at himself on the ‘mirror’ he then draws a space helmet on with soap causing the men to laugh and carry on with what they are doing.

Why Did We Choose To Deconstruct..? (New Concept)

As we changed our concept considerably, we decided we'd need to do more deconstructions that were relevant to our new idea.

  • Misery - inspirational for lead (obsessed female holds writer hostage)

  • Smiley - features masked villain; useful for our idea of using face make-up to create wounds on victim's face

  • Orphan - 'innocent child' villain; taps into personality of our antagonist especially how she doesn't have a family

  • One Hour Photo - male obsessed with perfect family and collects their photos

  • The Loved Ones - outcast girl steals boys and tortures them in revenge for not being invited to prom; revenge, hostage and torture aspect by girly female similar to our idea

  • The Imposter - documentary features family's side of the story of a man imposing as their son; can draw inspiration from family being tricked and their emotions

  • Jennifer's Body - strong female antagonist with gruesome torture scenes

  • He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not/The Roommate - seemingly innocent but actually psychotic and obsessed female protagonist

New Concept

As we discussed our idea as a group, we struggled to pinpoint a feasible plot-line for our trailer. Therefore we decided to change direction and go for a simpler premise.

Our social context would link to obsession, want and greed among humanity as well as the abuse and neglect young people receive. The trailer would be in the slasher horror genre and centre around a teenage female protagonist who yearns for a perfect family and so abducts people and forces them to take part in her twisted fantasy subjecting them to humiliating and tortuous acts.

Why Did We Chose To Deconstruct...?

  • The Sound Of My Voice/Martha Marcy May Marlene - genre of mystery, drama and psychological thriller and themes of secracy, cults, investigation and corruption which link to our idea.
  • Another Earth/The Truman Show - concepts is similar to those in Black Mirror. Both possibilities pin the future and technology highlighting the frightening repurcussions and consequences of such. These films focus on: the discovery of Earth 2 and one man's whole life being a TV show.

  • The Hunger Games - similar to The Truman Show as children fighting to the death is broadcast across the country; influences of media and the degradation of society.

  • Requiem For A Dream - hard-hitting and stylistic execution. We were interested in using various camera and editing techniques in our own trailer.

  • Doctor Who (The Empty Child) -  to find horror influences, conventions and techniques.

  • Dead Set - from creator of Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker. Focuses on influences on and from the media which links to our ideas of goverment conspiracies etc. and our main inspiration of Black Mirror.
  • Deja Vu - themes of mystery and the unknown plus camera/editing techniques
  • Misfits (Series 2, Episode 4) - Video-game influences, violent consequences and  effective stylised editing/camera techniques

  • A Mother's Son - deals with murder, mystery and influences from online pgraphy
