"Birthday Party"

  • Within our teaser trailer we are doing a 'Birthday party' scene where by the actors will be sat around a big table covered in food, just like a traditional child's birthday party.
  • We are hoping to get lots of different foods like crisps, cake, biscuits etc... of all different sizes and colour so that all the brightness will juxtapose with the basement they are sitting in.
  • In terms of mise en scene we are hoping to have lots of balloons, streamers and banners across the walls so that it look very bright, colourful and fun.

    'Party Games'
  • The party scene will hopefully also include traditional party games as well. The games should hopefully include things like 'Twister', 'Pin the tail on the donkey' and 'Bobbin for apples' however the games will have a twist to them. As our teaser is a slasher the games will have an element of torture within them.

Misery teaser trailer deconstruction

Teaser Trailer-

Camera Angles-
This clip has one long shot of a blizzard showing mountains in the background. It looks like a very secluded place away from anything or anyone else.
There is also an extreme close up of what looks like blood splatters which then forms letters.
Sound-
It starts off with diegetic sounds of a snowy blizzard alongside a non diegetic voiceover of a man narrating what the film is about.
There is then the non diegetic sound of a typewriter being used inferring that it will have a significant part within the film.
Mise en scene-
The snowy mountains in the background with the darkened sky could show the desolate place in which the film is set.
The use of red lettering of ‘MISERY’ allows the audience to infer the film has violence, bloodshed and death involved. The use of having misery written in the background but smaller with a blue tint contradicts the red as it represents calmness and tranquillity.
Editing-
The use of the non diegetic voiceover explains partly what the film is about without giving too much away as the on screen clues are minimal. The cutaways used of the typing show the audience what the title is as well.

Misery Trailer

Theatrical Trailer-

The trailer starts off with a blizzard being shown and a turned over car in the distance, the fading between clips shows a man inside the car. There is also a non diegetic instrumental soundtrack which is repetitive and almost creepy alongside the sounds there is a non diegetic voice over of a woman talking and seems very knowledgeable she is, we can infer, to be talking to the man.
The scene then changes to a house with the man in a bed, the furnishings of the house are minimal and basic. However there is some cutaway editing as a man and woman talk about a missing person who again can be inferred to be the man.
The eerie repetitive music still plays in the background as there is a close up of the man’s chin as he is being shaved by the woman ‘Annie’ she says ‘I was following you’ as though she was stalking the man. It then jump cuts to a Point of view shot through binoculars and a non diegetic voice over saying ‘Paul is dead’ is then fades to the isolated cabin, showing it to have lights on, as someone is home.
The non diegetic music then changes to something more sinister and slow. Annie comes out from the shadows calling the man a ‘dirty bird’ half of her face is shadowed as though she has two sides, of her, one of which is darker and crueller, and we as an audience are going to see it. She talks about ‘Misery’ as though she is a real person, not a fictional character. As an audience we can infer she has an obsession with Misery and the books, so also with Paul.
There is a close up shot of Paul turning over the phone and seeing it isn’t connected and it then jump cuts to his face to see the realisation that he is in fact trapped in the cabin. It then changes to match on action of Annie pulling out a gun, then of Paul falling out of bed, crawling through the house and taking a knife, the parallel editing alongside this shows Annie driving somewhere, which can be inferred home. There is then a shot reverse shot of Paul in bed and the door.
The non diegetic soundtrack quickens the pace as each clip changes quicker and the intensity is being increased. Throughout this montage of clips there is a cutaway of what seems to be lettering and it becomes clearer as more letters are shown that it is the title of the film.
Annie comes in and there is a point of view shot of Paul looking at Annie putting a wooden block between his feet and says ‘sh darling it’s for the best’ as though her using a hammer against Paul is perfectly logical. It then blacks out as a non diegetic voice says ‘God I love you’

The Truman Show Poster Deconstruction

·         The Truman show poster.

  •       The poster looks as though it’s advertising for a TV programme, however the tag line is ‘on the air, unaware’ which indicates what the film is about that although it’s a programme, ‘Truman’ is unaware. It is a TV programme within a film.
  •       The title is at the bottom of the screen which doesn’t follow the typical conventions of a film poster as it is not in the eye line.
  •       The picture of him quietly sleeping is again enhancing that he is blissfully oblivious to what is actually happening, and that people are looking at him.
  •       The fact it is a big screen with the words ‘live’ makes it seem even more real and the 'Day 10,909' showing how long this has been on air.

One hour photo

One Hour Photo trailer deconstruction.

  • The trailer starts with an establishing shot of a nice looking hose, and it slowly zooms in. Alongside this there is a non diegetic voice over of a boy talking about a man called Sy. It then jump cuts to a mid shot of the boy and his mum cuddling him. There is then jump cuts to a man who can be inferred to be Sy he is in a a bare room with white walls and boring furnishings. This scene juxtaposes the last one as he is alone and living a dull lie it would seem, whereas the boy and mum are look very loving and cosy.

  •   There is a close up of Sy looking at a reel of negatives and it jump cuts to an extreme close up and as the audience we can see it is a picture of the mum and boy, he is looking at their photo's, there is a non diegetic voice over of Sy saying that developing photo's is 'an important job' he takes it very seriously and wants the best for his clients, he can even remember the woman's address, as he says '326 Serano Terrace' this enhances that he knows the family well even if they don't know him. It then jump cuts to a mid shot of Sy is sitting in a cafe looking at pictures of this family, the waitress asks 'mind if I have a  look' thinking it is his family, when actually us an audience know it is not his family.

  • The non diegetic soundtrack sounds almost taunting, the loudness and intensity builds almost as if Sy's obsession with the family builds. There is a mid shot of Sy in his car seated very low staring past the camera, we can infer he is staring at the family. The use of parallel editing allows us to see Sy breaking into the family's house, and showing a Point of view shot of Sy looking at the family photo's on the fridge, which can be found in a typical loving house. As this clip is occurring, alongside it is a clip of Sy in the shop with the husband and he says 'if you don't mind my saying so, a very beautiful house' where there is a reaction shot and we see the husbands reaction to the news that this man has been in his home, it is understandably a look of shock.

  • The close up shot of Sy taking a picture and the zooming into the lens allows the audience to see that the obsession is taking over. The tracking shot of the mum through a lens camera allows us to see what Sy is looking at, and we feel as though we are stalking this family as well. the non diegetic voice over of Sy talking says 'the Oxford Dictionary definition of Snapshot'

    • There is then a montage of different snapshots of the family, the pace quickens and there is suddenly a black out and then zooms out and we as an audience can see a whole wall of pictures of the family. Sy is in the middle staring up at all the pictures, engrossed in the families lives.
    • A fast pace montage of different clips from the movie then flits on the screen. They show Sy's obsession with the family taking over. He looks almost distressed at one point, as though it is taking over his life and it is becoming too much.
    • The trailer finishes with a long shot through a camera lens of the family. It is looking in on the family through the window, this shows the complete obsession with the family. They are in their family home looking very happy together, and Sy is outside of this looking in.

    New Concept

As we discussed our idea as a group, we struggled to pinpoint a feasible plot-line for our trailer. Therefore we decided to change direction and go for a simpler premise.

Our social context would link to obsession, want and greed among humanity as well as the abuse and neglect young people receive. The trailer would be in the slasher horror genre and centre around a teenage female protagonist who yearns for a perfect family and so abducts people and forces them to take part in her twisted fantasy subjecting them to humiliating and tortuous acts.

    Concept Ideas

The first step to our coursework was to discuss as a group the themes and focus we wanted for our 'film'. We wanted to go for another serious genre, perhaps a horror or a thriller.

A big influence at this stage was Charlie Brooker's 'Black Mirror' as it was new to TV, innovative, original, effective and thought-provoking. This was something we found entertaining and powerful therefore something great to take inspiration from.

We therefore decided to look into focusing on the effects of technology, government conspiracy and obsession.

We thought of films that we liked and ones that used interesting techniques etc. so that we could incorporate and take influence for own on film.

After developing these ideas and thinking about real media products, we each chose films, TV show and research areas to study in order to expand on the points we've got and combine our findings to create our own plot.
