Final poster design

This is our final poster design which has been edited using Adobe Photoshop and iPiccy a free online photo editing website.

I firstly edited the photo on iPiccy increasing highlights and shadows to make it look more dramatic. I also increased the vibrancy of the colours in the photo.

All fonts were found on MyFonts and have been minipulated on Photoshop make the typography look designed and overall more professional looking. The idea of the typography was to make it look like wispy candle smoke and so I used the smudge and blur tools to achieve this look on both the title 'Bitter Sweet' and 'coming soon'.

For our tagline 'It's all fun and games' I used a simple bold font as this is what I noticed was conventional from my poster research. I put this in pink to twist the horror convention of typically having red and to suggest the girly/princessy element of our trailer. I used a satin effect on photoshop to create tone on the tagline image rather than one flat colour. By having the tagline to the positioned to the side of the image it draws the eye around the poster.

At the bottom of the poster to make it look more professional I added some production titles also.

Overall I think the poster does convey what we wanted to suggest of our trailer and does follow certain conventions to make it effective for the genre.

Poster photoshoot

  • Our final poster is having our antagonist holding a grotesque, disgusting, mouldy looking cake
  • We want our antagonist to have vibrant make up on to create a princess, girly appearance
  • The antagonist will be looking directly into the camera as this will look the most scary and creepy
  • Also having the antagonist bend there head down slighty created a more intense look
  • The lighting for the poster will be candle light so that there are dark shadows creating enigma as to who the character is
  • We varied the amount of candles lit as we found when they were all lit the surface of the cake became too bright and the detail was lost and so the mouldy surface was not noticeable
  • We found having one back candle lit up the face the best and created the right amount of shadow but also lit the cake so we could see the mouldy detail
  • We are pleased with the result of the photoshoot and choose one image to for our poster
Amy Freeman

Poster photoshoot - preparation

For our poster we are having a grotesque, rotten birthday cake to create the horror aspect and suggest the birthday theme.

Stages:
  • Firstly I dug parts out of the cake and then made these parts of the cake look mouldy by using green food colouring
  • I used a paintbrush to apply the food colouring and also put some of it around the holes also
  • I decided that there wasn't enough tone so added some brown paint to the food colouring to make a murky colour which looked more mouldy
  • I made sure I did this all over the cake including the sides
  • The I melted down the candles to get the wax melted down the sides of the cake
  • Some of the candles melted down to stubs which looked quite effective for making it look exaggerated and grotesque
  • The heat of the candles melted the icing also so it was also dripping down the sides which I didn't know would happen but looked very effective as this merged the food colouring with the icing better which made it look mouldy

Poster initial ideas

After looking at posters of existing films of our film type (horror, female antagonist) we started to think of ideas for our film's poster. We wanted to include hints as to what our film is about. We initially discussed possible ideas linking to out party theme and what could work for a film poster.

Possible ideas:
  • Antagonist holding mouldy, disgusting birthday cake so candles illuminate her face - eerie effect given from the candle light creating shadows
  • A party invitation
  • Overall image of party table with victims - over exaggerated mise en scene with party decorations but gruesome element of tortured guests
After looking more at the examples and our ideas we decided what we wanted from our poster. Including:

  • Antagonist - forefront of poster, main image
  • Designed typography rather than standardised font
  • Details such as production company titles and names to give an overall more professional look
  • Decide whether we would want to have a tagline
  • Gives hints to our plot - have a birthday theme within the photograph
  • Have a gruesome/grotesque element to portray the horror genre

Poster inspiration

All of these posters have female antagonists which is the same as our teaser trailer so have drawn on these films in particular as a source of inspiration. Each of these posters have the antagonist clearly shown face on to the viewer, this tells me that character must be established in teaser posters especially. The positive aspects I notice from these posters I will consider when designing the poster for our teaser trailer 'Bitter Sweet'.

Orphan
  • Close up of the antagonist 'Esther' directly face on looking straight at the viewer - draws your attention to her even though it is uncomfortable for viewer as she appears to be staring at you
  • Her eyes have been edited darker so that from a distance they appear to be all black creating a demonic look, the highlights on the face have also been heightened to make her brighter, more noticeable and shadows more defined
  • Edges of the poster have been blurred slightly to draw focus subtly inwards to the clear, illuminated face
  • Poster is very symmetrical and everything is centred, almost in a line starting from her hair parting straight down
  • Colour - blue is a calm colour which dominants the poster but contradicts the genre of the film however it is contrasted with the deep red neck choker which is a common colour for horror
  • Typography 'Orphan' is of mixed letter cases and looks scribbled like a child's writing which reflects themes of the film
  • Has a tagline in smaller case to the the title of the film
  • Taglines create enigma as to who this character is, children usually are innocent but we are told that 'there's something wrong with Esther'
  • Has production company names small at the bottom of the poster
Carrie
  • Again a close up image of the antagonist 'Carrie' although she appears to be looking down slightly into the camera
  • Direct eye contact with the viewer which creates an uncomfortable feeling
  • The tears and blood on her face mirror one another but poster is not completely symmetrical
  • Her hair frames the poster also
  • Bold, noticeable image of a cross on her necklace which gives the audience a clue towards the character
  • Editing has created more drastic shadows and highlights in the image
  • Colour is quite dull and greyish on her face but the blood creates the horror aspect and recognises the genre
  • Poster is once again centralised with the titles centred
  • Tagline is small above the title
  • Typography shows a crack running through it which hints to the character once more
  • Coming soon is included
Jennifer's Body
  • Antagonist's face in this poster is only partially shown which creates enigma as to who they actually are
  • Viewer is directly drawn to the bold image of the red lips - connotations of image being seductive, alluring and sexual
  • The blood dripping from the antagonists mouth however suggests the horror genre
  • Image has been edited to look almost cartoon like rather than realism
  • Dark hair and bright lips contrasts to the pale white skin - reminder of snow white look perhaps
  • Typography looks like a high school varsity font giving hints to the films plot and setting
  • Titles use previously popular, successful film 'Juno' to interest viewers as it from the creators
  • 'Megan Fox' is also used to draw in possible viewers
  • The title also 'Jennifer's body' is possibly suggestive alongside the seductive image which would show this is a sexualised horror film
The Loved Ones
  • This poster depicts the antagonist although she is at a different angle compared to the other posters looking more down the camera lens following the line of the drill she is holding
  • The editing of the poster has blurred more of the background so that viewers focus mainly on the drill and antagonists face before looking more at the background showing disco ball and lights
  • Antagonist seems sweet and princess like because of what she is wearing but the drill pointing directly at the viewer makes her look torturous
  • We are looking up at her so she is in a powerful position which hints towards her character
  • Typography subverts horror convention but instead is pink and girly
  • Tagline 'Prom can be torture' provides a clue to the plot
  • Uses 'coming soon'
After looking at these poster examples I can take from them that for a teaser poster it is important to establish character. I found that these posters were effective as they simply used the antagonists face. The posters are unsettling and uncomfortable, reflecting the genre, for the viewer by having them looking directly into the camera. This is something we would apply to our poster by including our antagonist and hints towards the plot and character. Taglines are also important to suggesting plot and typography is creatively done to convert or subvert genre.

The Truman Show Poster Deconstruction

·         The Truman show poster.

  •       The poster looks as though it’s advertising for a TV programme, however the tag line is ‘on the air, unaware’ which indicates what the film is about that although it’s a programme, ‘Truman’ is unaware. It is a TV programme within a film.
  •       The title is at the bottom of the screen which doesn’t follow the typical conventions of a film poster as it is not in the eye line.
  •       The picture of him quietly sleeping is again enhancing that he is blissfully oblivious to what is actually happening, and that people are looking at him.
  •       The fact it is a big screen with the words ‘live’ makes it seem even more real and the 'Day 10,909' showing how long this has been on air.

Jennifer's Body Poster

Deconstruction

  • The image on the poster shows a teenage girl sitting on a school desk in front of a blackboard. The theme is school which is supported by the mention of high school in the tagline. The girl is about 17/18 and holding books so we can guess that the film is set in a high school.
  • However this isn't the only theme as the desk she’s sitting on has a hand coming out of the lid which links to body horror. The tagline also reads: ‘She’s evil…and not just high school evil’. This suggests that the girl in the picture not only is a stereotypical popular American teen but is also the villain in the film in a more dangerous and horrific way.
  • It is suggested that this girl is a typical popular teen girl as is beautiful, wearing skimpy clothes and high heels with a smouldering expression. This appeals to the target audience of teenagers as she is a typical character that some can relate to.
  • The use of red is conventional for a horror as it connotes blood and dangers.
  • The font for ‘Jennifer’s Body’ is in the style of high school merchandise such as the numbers of the back of sports clothes which again links to the setting of a high school. Other font is in white so it can be read clearly.
  • All of the features of the poster are positioned centrally to make the poster easy to look at. The exception is the writing on the blackboard which is right next to the girl’s face therefore is in an eye-catching place.
  • The background to the poster is green and grey connoting a grisly and dank environment which is conventional for the horror genre.
  • The ‘hell yes’ on the blackboard is a sly comment at the link between evil and a good-looking girl. This is an inspirational feature as it’s not as obvious as the rest of the features.

Martha Marcy May Marlene Poster

Deconstruction

  • The primary colour in this poster is white. White has connotations of purity and innocence, which could link to the girl featured. The film is about her escaping from a cult so this could be reflecting on the corruption of innocence.
  • The image of the girl is featured in the shape of an ‘M’ which is related to the repeated initial of the names in the title. This film is about identity and life and so this could represent how she has been branded like cattle (in the cult) with this name.
  • The way we can only see her through this shape creates enigma as he cannot see her full face.
  • The simplicity of the poster is also reflected on through the font used for the text. The title in black demands a little more attention than the rest of the text as this is the most important. The rest of the text is in a grey/brown shade including information such as the actors’ names, a quote, a release date, festival name and credits. There’s also in a smaller font a website, Facebook and Twitter link encouraging the audience through social media.
  • Even more interestingly, there are 2 QR codes at the bottom used for a quick route for smart phones to access these links. This is more encouraging for audiences as it is instant and is therefore an effective means of promotion.
  • The ‘M’ image is the focus of the poster and although other elements i.e. the text doesn't seem to be placed in any particular strategic manner, they are all clear to see as the contrast well against the white background.
  • There is no tagline and as the image doesn't show anything other than a few facial features of the character, nothing about the story is given away.
  • One thing about the poster is, the genre and the target audience are not clear as hardly anything is shown to give any clues. This could encourage audiences to look more into it (the QR codes are useful) or it could put them off as there’s nothing there to attract/entice them.

One hour photo poster research

One Hour Photo Poster Deconstruction.

  • The landscape poster shows a collage of negative pictures and a man staring up at them. To a passer by this would look quite strange and the man is right in the middle so would be in eye line. He isn't facing the front though so it adds mystery.
  • At the top of the poster is an extreme close up of a man half hidden by a camera showing he is trying to be inconspicuous. He is looking straight forward, so would hold your gaze no matter what angle, it can be inferred that he is the main protagonist.
  • The picture has been edited to look like he is red, which could represent the 'developing room' and give out connotations of anger, aggression, and risk which could infer what the film might be about.
  • The tagline says 'There's nothing more dangerous than a familiar face' which gives away part of the genre being a thriller as it says 'dangerous,' so something bad will probably happen.
  • This poster doesn't follow typical conventions of posters as there isn't one main focus there are two, making passers by look all around the poster, the title is at the bottom also.

  • This is a different poster from the same film.
  • This shows the main protagonist also, this time he is distracted and looking at a reel of negative pictures.
  • The white gloves show he might trying to hide his fingerprints, not wanting to leave a trace.
  • The poster sightly follows the conventions of a poster with the main picture and title in the middle.
  • There is not a tagline so leaves complete mystery in what the film entails.

Poster Reasearch 2

                   Alice in wonderland.
  •  Use of quirky typography, follows genre of film.
  • As Johnny Depp as the main focus as he is a well known actor and people would go see the film as he is in it.
  • ‘Tim burton’ film, gives an indication of genre, will be funny and quirky.
  • Indication that is fantasy with the big castle in the background, huge mushrooms, and a blue caterpillar. This also shows it is more directed towards children.

                 Dorian Gray.

  • Gothic style typography.
  • Main character showing two sides of him: one is perfect, the other broken and tainted, indicating the films content. That it will be about him tainting his life.
  • Gothic Church in the background.
  • Tagline ‘forever young, forever cursed’ ties in with the picture.
  • All very dark colours; blacks, greys, with a stormy sky. Deep red inferring seduction?
  • Then bright orange to look like flames cutting right through him as though he is slowly disintegrating

                         Beautiful Losers.

  • Colourful typography. With same colour rain drops as though they have formed the title.
  • Butterfly as a whole, with a person in the middle as the body of the butterfly.
  • Tagline ‘Make something from nothing’ very positive way at looking at a situation.
  • All very colourful random images within the butterfly filling up the spaces.
  • Cast and crew names, pictures from the film, and characters all fitted in, with brightly coloured typography and outlines.
  • Blue sky in the background, like an actual butterfly flying through the sky, carefree style.
  • Black stencilled leaves around the edges, opposite to the rest of the poster, only part which has a negative connotation.

The Loved Ones Poster

  • The image on the poster shows a teenage girl dressed up in pink pointing a drill. Where she is, is unclear as the image is skewed and the background is out of focus, disorientating the audience and directing focus towards the image of the drill. The way that the background is slightly out of focus including the girl’s face slightly makes the clear image of the drill seem more 3-dimensional. Because she is holding it menacingly and pointing it toward the camera, this could make the audience uncomfortable.
  • The drill is pointing slightly down, not quite straight at the camera suggesting she is pointing it at something else. Her facial expression and the use of ‘torture’ in the tagline suggest she is threatening a victim but it is unknown who. This clearly shows the genre of the film being a horror.
  • It could be assumed she was at a dance, prom or party (supported by the tagline) as there is a disco ball in the background reflecting light on a ceiling. Her costuming also suggests this as she’s dressed in pink party dress, with bright pink make-up, nails and a pink party hat. The choice of pink suggests a girly-girl and so this could confuse the audience as this isn't a character you’d expect to be holding a drill menacingly which poses a lot of questions.
  • All the text is positioned to the right so the image is the focus, particularly the drill.
  • The tagline is positioned right next to the girl’s face as if it is something she could say, which is menacing. The tagline reads: ‘prom night can be torture’. This is ironic as it links both elements of the poster together and plays on the fact that many things could go wrong on prom night as there are high expectations but maybe not in this sense.
  • The title ‘The Loved Ones’ is positioned below, still on the right. The lettering appears to be white with a pink/purple shine with pink/purple glints. This fits well with the prom theme as it reflects like a mirror and a disco ball. The font is also modern reflecting this modern horror theme.
  • The mix of prom and horror/torture appeals to the teenage market as a target audience and including elements of both (including a power tool) would attract the audience and is appropriate for both this and the genre.

Another Earth Poster

  • The typography of the title is reminiscent to the film ‘Alien’ as the lettering is clear, modern and white. This hints at the film’s sci-fi links.
  • The ‘o’ of ‘Another’ is actually 2 circles overlapping each other as if the ‘o’ is duplicated itself; linking clearly with the story of the film which is obvious in the title and the image.
  • The rest of the font is in the same style, mainly at the bottom of the page in the form of a quote and a release date. The website is in blue to make it obvious and stand out against the image. This is what they want the audience to notice more so they log on and find out more about the film, creating a hype surrounding it.
  • All of the text including the official ‘Winner of the Sundance Festival’ logo at the top of the page, is focused centrally in the audience’s eye line.
  • The background of the poster is in various shades of blue, giving the poster an icy, scientific feeling. The girl in the centre of the poster breaks this up and adds human warmth. This is to show how the film is a drama as well as a sci-fi and to appeal to the whole range of possible target audiences however a specific target audience isn’t clear.
  • The background image shows the sea, another Earth and the moon. This is not an ambiguous image but merely sets the backdrop to the story. The fact she’s the focus suggests she’s integral to the story and is the main character affected by this.
  • Having a large focus on the girl clearly shows the audience the actress who’s playing her. In this case though, it doesn’t have any credits meaning they possible want the audience to think more about her as a character or create enigma and encourage them to research the film.
  • There is no tagline and so nothing more is given away about the film, creating enigma and intrigue.

Misery Deconstruction

Misery
The poster shows a scene of mountains at night time. They completely surround everything especially the tiny cabin at the bottom.
The title is in the middle of the poster so follows the typical convention so that passersby will be able to see clearly what it is called. The font if New Times Roman which is typically typewriter font so could have some significance within the film.
the tagline reads ‘ Paul Sheldon used to write for a living, now he is writing to survive’ which infers he is being made to by someone.

Clip- (48 seconds-2:33)

  • The scene starts with a close up of Paul looking quite serene as he sleeps. This is then interrupted by a non diegetic sound of the door closing. It jump cuts to a mid shot of Annie looking very angrily past the camera to Paul. Annie herself is shrouded in darkness giving connotations that she has a darker more sinister side which Paul will see now.
  •  There is then diegetic dialogue from Annie saying ‘How could you?’ as she walks towards the camera allowing it to change to a close up of Annie’s face, so that as the audience we can see she is very upset and angry with Paul.
  • Annie wears baggy clothes, it would seem she wears these kinds of clothes because she lives a very secluded lifestyle and has no one to impress, she doesn’t need to impress anyone as she has the Misery books to keep her life entertained. She also wears a cross round her neck throughout the film, this seems confusing because if she a woman of faith surely she shouldn’t be doing all of these things to Paul, however in her obsessed mind she is doing the right thing for Paul.
  • Annie shouts louder ‘Misery can’t be dead’ which is the main character in Paul’s book. We as an audience can see that Annie is fixated on the book and thinks ‘Misery’ is a real person so when Paul kills her off it is like murdering a person. She shakes the bed as to hurt Paul and when it jump cuts to a mid shot of him we can see the pain in his facial expression on his face.

  •                 The camera then tracks Annie and she grabs a stool in anger ready to throw at Paul. At this point there is a shot reverse shot and there is a high angle looking down at Paul signifying his vulnerability and there is nothing he can do about it.
  •        Annie voice then changes to a normal and calm voice, which can be considered quite creepy as she suddenly calmed down from being very angry. She calls Paul ‘a dirty birdy’ as though disappointed in Paul.
  • Annie goes to walk out of the door then turns and it jump cuts to a close up of Annie as she says ‘If I die, you die’ being deadly serious. It then jump cuts to Paul to see his reaction to this news, which is scared and fearful for his life.

Clip-

  •    The clip starts with a mid shot of Annie reading as it jump cuts to Paul asking Annie ‘shall I continue?’ as though asking permission for fear of the consequences. She looks as up as though very happy there is then diegetic dialogue of Annie talking very fast about Misery and how Paul brought her back to life.
  • Throughout this is shot reverse shots to Paul as he just sits patiently listening to her babble. Annie then spins round shouting ‘Misery’s alive, Misery’s alive’ very overly excited it would seem even delusional to the audience, as she is getting so excited over a fictional character.
  • There is then a mid shot of Annie as she runs out of the room to put on her Liberace records ecstatic at the thought if ‘Misery’ being alive.

Clip- (5:27-7:30)
  •            This depicts a  mid shot of Paul as he calls for Annie because he has finished his book. It jumo cuts to an extreme close up of a cigarette on a coaster with a doily which gives it a nice finishing touch it would seem, this then jumps to a close up from a high angle looking down at the tray with a cigarette, bottle of champagne and one glass on it. Annie then takes a gun and puts it in her pocket as though just in case anything happens as he facial expression is rather sinister.
  •       When the camera then tracks Annie coming in and putting the tray down she looks past the camera straight at Paul asking ‘Did I do good?’ as though she is trying to please him, she has this obsession with him an now he has finished the book all she wants to do is impress him.
  •        When Annie leaves the room it jump cuts to Paul hurriedly getting ready to alight his book, he looks rather sinister and fearless of Annie, she comes in and sees what he is doing and suddenly drops the glass as though she is in disbelief that we could possibly do such a thing.

Doctor who deconstruction

Doctor who.

Clip-

Camera Angles-

The clip starts a mid shot of both of the characters as it shows their full facial expression. The camera gradually zooms in to each character so that it is a close up of just their faces so we as an audience can see their fear of the child more clearly. It then jumps to the little boy so we as an audience can see what the Doctor has spun round to look at. Finally there is a long shot from over shoulder of the boy so we can see the adult’s scared expression.

Sound-
In the background there seems to be a non diegetic flickering sound alongside non diegetic dialogue of a boy speaking. There is then a loud non diegetic violin played, each sound is short to make it sound scarier.
Mise en Scene-
The room is very dimly lit to give a more eerie effect. Between the boy and the other characters there is a smashed window however parts of it still remain which indicate a divide between the two.
Editing-
The use of zoom into the characters face increases the intensity of the situation and enhances their scared facial expression. The shot reverse shot of the Doctor and the tape allows the audience to see its not playing and understand the Doctor’s fear.

Clip- (35-56 seconds)

Camera Angles
The mid shot of Rose indicates she is looking at something above her. At first there is a long shot of what looks like a lost boy, but as it gets closer there is then a mid shot of a boy in a gas mask looking very lifeless. The fact it just jump cuts to a closer shot if him alongside the music makes him seem creepier although in reality he is just a little boy.
The point of view shot from the boy looking down at Rose tracking her running allows the audience to feel as though it is them doing the tracking.

Sound
The non diegetic dialogue of a boy saying ‘mummy’ doesn’t sound scared, but almost scary as it sounds almost threatening.
As Rose turns to see what is on the roof there is a non diegetic violin played at a high pitch which sounds creepy and then the audience can infer the boy is not all good.
Mise en scene
The little boy in plain clothes wearing a gas mask follows the typical convention of WWII, he looks scary although he is only a little boy, and however the writers are playing on the typical convention and made a small child look creepy so to scare the audience. Rose contradicts the stereotype by wearing a bright Union Jack shirt.
Editing
The pan from Rose to what she is looking at allows the audience to feel as though they are turning to look as well.
The use of the point of view shot through the gas mask, allows the effect to be further enhanced that the audience are wearing the gas mask.

Clip- (18 seconds+)

·
The point of view shot from underneath the table allows the audience to see someone coming in, and the diegetic squeaking floorboards adds to the eeriness.  An apple falls out of the bag, alongside that there is a non diegetic sound of a violin which makes is sound scarier. There is then a point of view shot from the boy’s perspective, through the gas mask so there is a distorted effect, looking towards the apple and walking towards it as there is no music alongside it adds scariness.

·

There is a close up shot of Nancy looking very scared shrouded in darkness as though alone. It then changes to a point of view and looks towards the door, meaning Nancy is going to try and escape. However the boy turns and locks the door by pointing, there is then a shot reverse shot of Nancy and the boy as he asks ‘Are you my mummy?’
·          The scene then jump cuts to the hospital where there is a long shot of Rose looking at a patient, suddenly they get up and the non diegetic violin starts again. The parallel editing allows the audience to see Nancy and the Doctor both backing into the corner as they are being trapped.
·          The long shot of the patients allows the audience to see how trapped the Doctor is and how outnumbered he is. The simple repetition of ‘mummy’ with the elongated ‘U’ makes it seem much creepier.

Trailer-

Camera Angles
Throughout the whole trailer it is very fast pace and uses a variety of camera angles to show what the episode is about. Some of these include establishing shots of London and close up shots of characters to see their expression. The last camera angle is a high angle of Rose falling; below we see a fire that she is falling into.
Sound
The non diegetic traditional doctor who theme tune is used throughout the trailer.
There is the diegetic sound of planes flying through the air and bombs so enhances the fact that the episode is set in WWII.
The diegetic dialogue of the boy saying ‘please let me in mummy’ sounds sad and pleading. However it could be inferred to be scary.although there is diegetic dialogue from the characters they don’t fully
explain every situation, and give barely anything away.
Mise en scene
Following the stereotypical conventions of a trailer, we as an audience see all of the main characters this includes the little boy who plays a big part in the episode. The scene is set, WW2, alongside the reason for going there, following a bomb. A space ship is seen alongside a new and never seen before character.
Editing
The whole trailer is a montage of clips throughout the episode. It follows the convention of having a clip at the end which will entice the audience and want them to watch the next episode.

·         Doctor who poster.
A very simple poster with the signature gas mask, it is empty which represents ‘the empty child’ it is at the bottom of the poster which is contradicting the typical convention of a poster as it makes passersby look around the whole poster.
·         The colour of the background is a very dull grey/green which again is stereotypically the kind of colour found in WWII.
·         The tagline says ‘Are you my mummy?’ which is one of the most repeated sayings within this episode. It is using a personal pronoun so is directing the question straight at the audience.
