He loves me, He loves me not trailer deconstruction

Sound
  • Voiceover
  • Romantic, soft music to begin with
  • ‘in love with her art’ and ‘in love with his work’ – drawing parallels by using 'in love' twice, establishing genre also
  • ‘searching for something special’ - typically romantic
  • ‘chance encounter brought them together in a love affair that looked perfect until they each took another look’ - mood and tone of trailer changes to a more sinister feel
  • Sound of rushing, wind-like to mimic rewinding time
  • More tense, subtle music comes in after rewind
  • ‘was it passion or paranoia’ and ‘was it desire or delusion’ - creates contrasts and provoking questions to the audience about what the actually plot of the film will be
  • Enhanced, emphasised diegetic sound of camera shutter
  • ‘was it a secret or something else’ - posing questions
  • ‘acclaimed internationally actress Audrey Tatou’ -using her name and reputation to promote film
  • ‘Invites you to share the seduction but don’t reveal the secret’ - involves the audience and suggest they will be in on the secret
  • Music builds towards end to become more creepy and enticing almost

Titles
  • ‘Samuel Goldwyn films’
  • Black and white titles, ‘he loves me’ fades in first followed by ‘ he loves me not’ and the second phrase grows whilst the other sinks back which emphasises the ‘he loves me not’
  • Titles of passion and paranoia are juxtaposed
  • Titles of desire and delusion are also juxtaposed

Mise en scene
  • Roses – predominately red connotations of lust, desire and love
  • Life drawing class – intimate
  • X ray of heart – cardiologist, science logical side of the heart rather than the theme of love
  • People kissing on tv – ideals of love, fixation, constantly surrounds us
  • Handing over of pink rose often given to another to express thankfulness, admiration and happiness
  • Parisian life - city of love
  • Arc de triomphe - iconic of Paris, establishing scene
  • Behind a fence - distanced, lept away from him always looking in on him
  • Throwing suitcase off bridge
  • Waiting by the telephone
  • Behind glass window - again distanced from him
  • Wedding dress - doesn't fit
  • Police investigation - camera documenting crime
  • Kissing another woman when we are led to think that the other couple are together
  • Mouth to mouth
  • Painting over portrait in destructive manner
  • Artwork
  • Enigma as to what’s in the box

Camera angles
  • Frame is filled with roses and protagonist is centered at the middle of this surrounded by roses
  • Pan across model to sketch
  • Camera revolves around action doesn’t remain static
  • Close up/ reaction shot of her face when she sees him on Tv
  • Zooms into his face, grainy quality as it’s on a tv screen – facial expression is worried
  • Close up of hands on paper towel – focus on their interactions
  • Close up on pink rose – again focus on their interactions
  • Mid shots of them smiling at one another
  • Panning shot of driving car – following them
  •  Fast tilt downwards to close up of her face behind fencing
  • Over the shoulder shot showing the audience what see is looking at – him pacing around his office, camera is at a low angle as she is looking up at him
  • Pan following him walking through a crowd at a party
  • Over view shot over her throwing suitcase in water
  • Long shot switches to close up as she is running
  • Crane shot retracting from her backwards down a spiral staircase
  • Mid shot of passionate kissing and as they move aside she is seen standing isolated, alone across the road
  • Over view shot pull upwards as she receives CPR
  • Close up of his face as he revives her – concern, worry
  • Close up of destruction of painting
  • Camera has been placed in the box so that we can see the characters rather than what is inside the box, box lid is then shut
  • Close up of the box but cuts to his reaction so enigma is created about the box
  • Close up of her admiring smile as she accepted the rose

Editing
  • Jump cuts from one snippet to another
  • Often cuts fade in and out to black
  • Fading images into one another
  • Car is reversed at a fast pace into a rewind of action and time
  • Fast moving montage of film is shown in the rewind of time
  • Words ‘passion’, ‘paranoia’, ‘desire’ and ‘delusion’ are overlaid onto top of images
  • ‘passion’ is faded into ‘paranoia’ and this is the same with ‘desire’ and ‘delusion’
  • Long, over view shot of her and close up of her face have been overlaid on top of one another to create a contrast
  • Pace of cuts from one image to another builds towards the end of the trailer
  • Three split screen of her doing her make up
  • Flash to white screen after he opens the box
