- The titles begin with statements which are used with non diegetic sound and create a sense of enigma.
- Text is used effectively throughout the trailer to engage with the audience through the use of rhetorical questions such as “But what influences the choices you make?” This is effective because it gives the audience an idea of what the film explores but does not tell any plot and also provokes their thoughts to involve them with the trailer. This gives a fly on the wall effects and adds to the realism that is expected of British dramas.
- The promotional aspect of the trailer is achieved by using Plan B’s name in the titles as this is likely to attract the intended audience of young adults who may be fans of his music. Again, no plot is given away as most viewers know what to expect from the themes explored in Plan B’s music.
- The film is also promoted heavily in the trailer through quotes. The audience are targeted and identified by using quotes from media institutions that are familiar and well recognised by them such as q magazine and fhm.
Camera Angles
- Establishing shots of London set the scene for the film. However, few large and highly significant landmarks are included so only those who are familiar with the area would recognise it, suggesting that the film is urban and set just outside the centre of London. Alone, this does not define audience or genre.
- A lot of close ups and some point of view shots are used in the trailer. These intimate shots give the audience an insight in to the lives of the characters and the environment that they live in, this is effective for showing that the genre is drama because of the personal level that most camera angles are on.
- Therefore, quick shots only give a small insight which is useful in a trailer for not giving to much away and creating enigmas.
Editing
- Ill mannors uses a common convention of a trailer by starting off slowly paced and speeding up throughout.
- Editing is used effectively when cuts between various shots speed the pace up; possibly giving a reflection of the pace of the film and the action in it. Also, the speeding up, slowing down and black and white effects on some shots support the idea of going back though time.
- Although most editing aspects do not directly target the audience, it allows more shots to be included in the trailer and gives an idea of pace and amount of content, which is appropriate for attracting the target audience.
Mise en Scene
- Many issues such as drugs, alcohol and violence are raised in the trailer of ill mannors through the use of mise en scene. These are effective for the genre as they are typical of British dramas.
- This film has an urban edge and the use of guns, knives, drugs and alcohol may attract the intended audience as they are likely to be young adults who have been affected by one of the above and may have an interest in raising awareness or may just want to see how these particular social groups are represented; especially if they consider themselves to be a part of that particular group.
Sound
- Non-digetic Music at the beginning of the trailer is very eary with piano sounds which sounds like it would typically be used in a horror trailer. This is effective for enticing the audience but may not appear to the target audience immediately as it is not a genre that is expected to be popular with them.
- However, the music is effective for reflecting to grittiness and disequilibrium that is to follow in the trailer.
- By subverting a common convention of trailers and not starting in a state of equilibrium the trailer forebodes the unsettling nature of the film which is effective for identifying the British drama genre when this sound is used in conjunction with the other technical areas.
- Non- diegetic music that is used later on in the trailer identifies the audience better as it is of a rap/grime genre that would be more popular with them than the music used previously.
- This is effective for engaging their interest and identifying the genre of the film. The lyrics to the song are also effective for explaining the concept of the film as it was written specifically as a soundtrack for the film.
- However, this is still effective as it does not introduce any plot or characters but just gives a glimpse of what the film will explore which is effective for teasing the audience and encouraging them to see the film.
- The diegetic speech from clips of the film is the only element of the trailer that outlines a plot. However, this only introduces a few characters and many others and unexplained events are seen throughout the trailer. This creates a sense of enigma and suspense for the audience.
