The Loved Ones Poster

  • The image on the poster shows a teenage girl dressed up in pink pointing a drill. Where she is, is unclear as the image is skewed and the background is out of focus, disorientating the audience and directing focus towards the image of the drill. The way that the background is slightly out of focus including the girl’s face slightly makes the clear image of the drill seem more 3-dimensional. Because she is holding it menacingly and pointing it toward the camera, this could make the audience uncomfortable.
  • The drill is pointing slightly down, not quite straight at the camera suggesting she is pointing it at something else. Her facial expression and the use of ‘torture’ in the tagline suggest she is threatening a victim but it is unknown who. This clearly shows the genre of the film being a horror.
  • It could be assumed she was at a dance, prom or party (supported by the tagline) as there is a disco ball in the background reflecting light on a ceiling. Her costuming also suggests this as she’s dressed in pink party dress, with bright pink make-up, nails and a pink party hat. The choice of pink suggests a girly-girl and so this could confuse the audience as this isn't a character you’d expect to be holding a drill menacingly which poses a lot of questions.
  • All the text is positioned to the right so the image is the focus, particularly the drill.
  • The tagline is positioned right next to the girl’s face as if it is something she could say, which is menacing. The tagline reads: ‘prom night can be torture’. This is ironic as it links both elements of the poster together and plays on the fact that many things could go wrong on prom night as there are high expectations but maybe not in this sense.
  • The title ‘The Loved Ones’ is positioned below, still on the right. The lettering appears to be white with a pink/purple shine with pink/purple glints. This fits well with the prom theme as it reflects like a mirror and a disco ball. The font is also modern reflecting this modern horror theme.
  • The mix of prom and horror/torture appeals to the teenage market as a target audience and including elements of both (including a power tool) would attract the audience and is appropriate for both this and the genre.
