The Roommate: Deconstruction of Poster

  • This poster follows many conventions such as a red, white and black colour scheme. However, there are a range of other neutral colours, and those that are associated with horror are subliminal which may reflect the underlying horror tones.
  • Therefore, the red title stands out as it is an alarming colour and the font has a distorted effect. This and the dark skies create a sense of enigma as to why a roommate or a college experience should be feared.
  • The picture of the protagonist is centred, conforming with the golden rule. The editing of the photo surrounding her makes her stand out and makes it obvious that she is a protagonist. Also, the edit that makes the surrounding people look like they are moving may reflect the fast paced college lifestyle that the audience can expect to see in the equilibrium of the film.
  • Her staring facial expression may intimidate the audience and make them feel uncomfortable, especially if they have picked up on the idea of her being the roommate.
  • Also, the building in the background looks archaic and rundown; typical of a horror film. This will juxtaposition the audience's expectations as a college should be and environment that feels safe to be in.
