Misery trailer deconstruction.

Misery Trailer

Theatrical Trailer-

•        The trailer starts off with a blizzard being shown and a turned over car in the distance, the fading between clips shows a man inside the car. There is also a non diegetic instrumental soundtrack which is repetitive and almost creepy alongside the sounds there is a non diegetic voice over of a woman talking and seems very knowledgeable she is, we can infer, to be talking to the man.
•         The scene then changes to a house with the man in a bed, the furnishings of the house are minimal and basic. However there is some cutaway editing as a man and woman talk about a missing person who again can be inferred to be the man.
•         The eerie repetitive music still plays in the background as there is a close up of the man’s chin as he is being shaved by the woman ‘Annie’ she says ‘I was following you’ as though she was stalking the man. It then jump cuts to a Point of view shot through binoculars and a non diegetic voice over saying ‘Paul is dead’ is then fades to the isolated cabin, showing it to have lights on, as someone is home.
•         The non diegetic music then changes to something more sinister and slow. Annie comes out from the shadows calling the man a ‘dirty bird’ half of her face is shadowed as though she has two sides, of her, one of which is darker and crueller, and we as an audience are going to see it. She talks about ‘Misery’ as though she is a real person, not a fictional character. As an audience we can infer she has an obsession with Misery and the books, so also with Paul.
•         There is a close up shot of Paul turning over the phone and seeing it isn’t connected and it then jump cuts to his face to see the realisation that he is in fact trapped in the cabin. It then changes to match on action of Annie pulling out a gun, then of Paul falling out of bed, crawling through the house and taking a knife, the parallel editing alongside this shows Annie driving somewhere, which can be inferred home. There is then a shot reverse shot of Paul in bed and the door.
•         The non diegetic soundtrack quickens the pace as each clip changes quicker and the intensity is being increased. Throughout this montage of clips there is a cutaway of what seems to be lettering and it becomes clearer as more letters are shown that it is the title of the film.
Annie comes in and there is a point of view shot of Paul looking at Annie putting a wooden block between his feet and says ‘sh darling it’s for the best’ as though her using a hammer against Paul is perfectly logical. It then blacks out as a non diegetic voice says ‘God I love you’

Exterior Location Scout

Hextable (Daytime)

  • We were looking to base some of our exterior shots in a small village/community.
  • I used to live in Hextable, which is based locally between Swanley and Dartford and thought this could be a possible location as there is very much a village feel to the area.
  • During our trailer, there will be many ‘members of the community’ going missing. We were looking for places and everyday activities they’d be doing just before their abduction, for example: walking the dog, jogging, walking home from school, playing in the swing park etc.
  • Hextable has country lanes, fields, small streets, a village green, a swing park, old fashioned bus-stops, a pub and a corner shop.

  • Some areas would be appropriate for our horror genre such as the country lanes full of bends and camouflaged areas. These locations may be more effective at night. We could have characters running here/walking home from the bus-stop/pub.

  • There are three possible bus stops we could feature: one wooden, one stone and one plastic. We wanted to stay away from modern, inner-city bus-stops because we wanted the area to seem more remote.

  • The pub is definitely a setting we could use for a night-time shot with a man to be abducted. The pub is located along the country lane surrounded by fields so would be really effective and scary/creepy to use to sustain tension and create shocks.

  • There’s also an alley behind some houses where cars and white vans are parked. It looks like a slightly risky place to be hanging around, therefore it would be particularly appropriate for people to  go missing.

  • Locations for a child abduction could be the school or swing park. The school is at the end of the lane and is concealed by lots of trees and metal fencing which makes it seem gloomy, which an ominous tone, especially in rainy weather.

  • The swing park is very small, simple and slightly old. It is situated in the middle of a large green that is abandoned this time of year.

  • The park/village green is full of broken benches and has an outdated telephone box outside which are appropriate for our small village setting and horror genre.

The Roommate: Deconstruction of Poster

  • This poster follows many conventions such as a red, white and black colour scheme. However, there are a range of other neutral colours, and those that are associated with horror are subliminal which may reflect the underlying horror tones.
  • Therefore, the red title stands out as it is an alarming colour and the font has a distorted effect. This and the dark skies create a sense of enigma as to why a roommate or a college experience should be feared.
  • The picture of the protagonist is centred, conforming with the golden rule. The editing of the photo surrounding her makes her stand out and makes it obvious that she is a protagonist. Also, the edit that makes the surrounding people look like they are moving may reflect the fast paced college lifestyle that the audience can expect to see in the equilibrium of the film.
  • Her staring facial expression may intimidate the audience and make them feel uncomfortable, especially if they have picked up on the idea of her being the roommate.
  • Also, the building in the background looks archaic and rundown; typical of a horror film. This will juxtaposition the audience's expectations as a college should be and environment that feels safe to be in.

The Truman Show Poster Deconstruction

·         The Truman show poster.

  •       The poster looks as though it’s advertising for a TV programme, however the tag line is ‘on the air, unaware’ which indicates what the film is about that although it’s a programme, ‘Truman’ is unaware. It is a TV programme within a film.
  •       The title is at the bottom of the screen which doesn’t follow the typical conventions of a film poster as it is not in the eye line.
  •       The picture of him quietly sleeping is again enhancing that he is blissfully oblivious to what is actually happening, and that people are looking at him.
  •       The fact it is a big screen with the words ‘live’ makes it seem even more real and the 'Day 10,909' showing how long this has been on air.

Location 2 (The basement)

Interior Location Research.
After initial research of looking at images of good looking basements that fit the criteria of what we wanted, we started looking at films with basements in them. Basements that are a scary place to be, where the characters obviously want to get out, but can't.
The first film I looked at was a film with Danny Dyer called 'The Basement' which is about six friends who are lured to an underground basement for a sinister experiment. The bare and dark place is very scary, and is the kind of place we are looking for too.

This picture shows the kind of thing we are looking for. It shows a large space to any kind of 'torture' could potentially happen. The dull and bare walls make it seem as though it is unhabitual and desolate, which is the look we are looking for as it seems a very rejected place to be.
The picture to the right show different scene from the 'Basement' this is a corrider, the long shot straight down the corrider seems very creepy, as though never ending. again the bare bricked walls shows a neglected place. There is also lack of lights within the corridor, this could build up suspense as people wouldn't know where they are going or see if there is a way out.

This last picture shows a hand tracing the word 'HELP' which has been written in what looks like blood, this can be considered a typical convention of horror films, however it works as it can seem very scary and realistic.

This  film shows the kind of basement we are looking for, it is very bare and run down. The walls and dull and almost neglected. the lack of lights adds to the scary effect as nothing is clearly shown and the wrting again makes the situation much more realistic, which is the aim we are also looking for.

He Loves Me He Loves Me Not scene deconstruction #1

38:20 – 40:00

Sound
  • Enhanced heartbeat is presumably Angelique's
  • Breathing again is Angelique's after she has been running
  • Non-diegetic operatic music - dramatises the scene
  • Whisper of 'Je t'aime' meaning I love you, subtle sound could represent how Angelique has just about heard it as she is intruding
  • I love you repeats itself almost like it is playing over in Angelique's mind
  • Slamming of police van doors and subtle siren is drowned out but the non-diegetic music and heartbeat
  • Heartbeat continuous thorughout scene
  • Slow click of each gas knob
  • Diegetic seeping gas sound

Mise en scene
  • Running
  • Police van
  • Slobby clothing -  not concerned with her appearance to obsessed to care
  • Ringing her hands – worry as she cares for Loic
  • His busy scene being surrounded by police and reporters contrasts her rather empty scene looking over, shows she is isolated from everything
  • Dishevelled appearance – hair is messy and unkempt, grazed cheek, no make up (contrast to early in the film where she was seen enjoying putting on make up and making herself up)
  • Wife's wedding ring clearly in shot – reaffirms how unattainable he is
  • Passionate kiss between Loic and his wife
  • His gaze is solely on wife
  • Angelique is staring at him
  • Angelique attempts suicide – what she has seen has confirmed he has eluded her and her obsession with him is so strong she wants to commit suicide
  • Lays on the floor – awaiting and closes her eyes

Camera angles
  • Tracking shot of her running
  • Long shot of him being taken by the police – her perspective always watching from a far like a stalker would
  • Wife runs into frame, interrupts Angelique's vision and sole focus on Loic and so she becomes distracted by the pair of them together
  • Camera is always following Loic - reflects Angelique's focus on him
  • Mid shot of kiss which is centred in the middle of the camera frame
  • Close up on Angelique's face shows her reaction to their kiss - facial expression looks as though she has been betrayed, her eyes glossy close to tears
  • Close up of passionate kiss
  • Blurry shoulder of someone at the edge of the shot in the way - perhaps from Angelique's perspective as she is watching through the crowd
  • Another close up of Angelique's face, her eyes follow the police van as he is driven away and her nostrils flare showing her upset
  • Close up of Angelique turning on the gas knobs - allows the audience to realise what is happening
   Editing
  • Cuts from Angelique to what she is looking at then back and forth to see her reactions to the action
  • Slowed down motion to make the kiss more intense and to show that it is what is playing on Angelique's mind
  • Slower pace to reflect Angelique's disbelief in what she has witnessed and how time has slowed for her as she has had a sudden shock/impact of the truth which she is struggling to comprehend
  • The pace is very slow in order to be reflective

  • Over view shot pull upwards as she receives CPR
  • Close up of his face as he revives her – concern, worry
  • Close up of destruction of painting
  • Camera has been placed in the box so that we can see the characters rather than what is inside the box, box lid is then shut
  • Close up of the box but cuts to his reaction so enigma is created about the box
  • Close up of her admiring smile as she accepted the rose

Editing
  • Jump cuts from one snippet to another
  • Often cuts fade in and out to black
